Summer in San Fransisco
2018-11-16_0001.jpg

I spent my summer in Silicone Valley, which was filled with many trips to San Fransisco. Here are a few photos captured around town.

The Process

These images were taken with a Nikon FM2 and the 50mm f/1.8. I exposed Portra 400 at 200, and Portra 160 at 100.

Montara Beach - Spring Tones

Peaceful, yet forceful

Just south of San Fransisco, Montara Beach provides a quiet, almost calming atmosphere for spending a day exploring. Spring in the Bay Area was a gorgeous combination of fog and cool weather, always setting the mood for photos that look straight off of a a movie set. No matter where you look, everything appears shrouded in mystery, the roads and buildings holding secrets. Here's two rolls of film shot one afternoon while exploring Montara Beach. The tones perfectly frame an area with relaxing vibes balanced with crashing waves.

The Process

These images were taken with a Nikon FE2 and both the 28mm f/3.5 and the 50mm f/1.8. I exposed Portra 400 at 200, and Portra 800 at 800, but pushed one stop. I found the Portra 800 gave beautifully vivid and balanced colors with large grain, while the Portra 400 lacked some punch but had less grain and a more neutral look.

A View Like No Other

No visit to Los Angeles is complete without a visit to the Hollywood Hills. For me, the absolute best place to go is Griffith Observatory.

This particular trip had us at the airport around 4am, and with the longer trip from Anaheim we decided to spend the day in town. While most things were closed, we were able to grab coffee at intelligentsia. I always cherish trips to California for multiple reasons, but having access to several of the best coffee shops in the US is an added bonus.

After grabbing coffee, we were treated with a sunrise like no other. While this was partially due to the wild fires ravaging the area, it was the early morning glow coming over the hills that made this visit special.

The number of individuals out relaxing and enjoying the peace and calm in an otherwise busy city surprised me, but it makes sense. I now know the secret to handling the unrelenting traffic on a daily basis.

It's even easy to forget the number of people usually occupying the structures at sunset. Sunrise is my new favorite time to visit.
